Big Differences
Actually, I do not believe the so called “culture shock”. But it really happens in my life. February 8, 2010, it is my first time that to watch an original American news channel. I am not accustomed to watch news on television because when I hear the English emit from a TV, my brain does not work and I will be crazy. I was sunk in English every day, the small hope of mine is to enjoy my mother language emitting from movies or TV shows so that I cannot think it by using brain. As time goes by, I enjoy this feeling very much. My first time to watch news and analyze them is not smooth going as I imagine. I choose Channel 9—a domestic news channel. There are big differences between Chinese news and American news reporting.
Anchors in China are reporting news in limited time. Generally, the CCTV News is 30 minutes and begins at 7 pm. But the news that reports in America is continuously keeping for hours. News, in China, is reported by a man and a woman formally and played in every channel. There should not involve talk show or any other kind of amusement in. News includes country affairs and international messages. As a result of the CCTV News is representing for country, it is very important. However, the news in American, especially in Channel 9, there are some teasing methods, advertisements and talk shows inserted. In studio, there are switch camera lens among anchors. I am surprised that weather reporting can be involved into news hosting. Conversely, weather report which includes the whole country is reporting after the CCTV News.
This is the last blog for Communication 10. So I have some thoughts and reflections for this course. Now, I am interested in the media more than before. I learn a different way to think about the mass media and recognize a new field for it. In class, it is always hard for me to spread out my opinion. There are two reasons. One is that I am afraid and not accustomed to make a statement in class due to accept the education system in China before. If I should say something, I must think about whether it is proper and right or not. Another reason is that, sometimes, after I think an opinion comprehensively, others just have put up my opinion already. There is a black girl in this class. What a pity. Still now, I cannot understand her accent and do not know what she talks about. Out of class, I read the readers seriously and learn a lot of things. In addition, I also do lots of research to consummate my knowledge construction. Even the big differences make me be in trouble, but I absorb new things which will also help me in the future.

My Love—Chanel
Every girl has a dream about having a pair of crystal shoes. My dream and love is Coco Chanel. I am fond of the design of its products. Every year, Chanel will increase the price in a proper percentage, which is the way luxury products keep their value. Lots of socialites are crazy to collect the classic Chanel bags. If one design is not available at the shop, people stand by the waiting list for the bag no matter how much money they will pay. In my opinion, the bags is representing a person’s taste. In addition, buy a classic product is the way to invest because of the price increasing every year. It means that your second hand bag may have a higher price than the original one. You get what you pay for. The qualities of the bags are no doubts.
The most famous Chanel bags are CC which is single deck inside and 2.55 which is double deck inside. Chanel CC has a beautiful logo clasp and Chanel 2.55 has a rectangle clasp. Both of them are crazy collected by ladies. This year, in February 1, 2010, it was reported that 20 percent increasing in the price of Chanel bags during the financial crisis makes people shocked. It is much more expensive than before. Lots of people are fighting against that someone uses such luxury bags. There is a different opinion among people. But I think it is the lifestyle people choose to live. We know how much we can spend to improve our quality of life.
Media makes the products more beautiful and more attractive to people. Besides the function of transmitting messages, mass media also create a crystal house for the girls to aspire after what they love.

During the Chinese New Year—Spring Festival, there is a spectacular rise in house prices in a southeast island, named Hainan, in China. It is reported that the house prices rise approximate thousands of yuan in a month. It is understood that there is a Hainan international tourism construction program settled. Based on the new policies, 17 billion yuan on house trading are done in five days. The amount of trading money in five days is equal to the whole year’s trading in 2008. A lot of people and businessmen are looking up the value of the tourism. Therefore, it is wise to invest money on the land. This behavior is common in China these years. The craziest person just bought 60 houses one time and paid off in one lump sum. As far as I know, not only the house prices but also the hotel prices are rising sharply. If you want to enjoy one night in a five-star hotel, you should book the room ahead of time and spend nearly 3000 dollars per night there.
A lot of people just concern about the situation in Hainan now. They connect today’s situation with the bubble economies in real estate in 1990s. They are afraid that the speed of increasing house prices will hit Chinese finance again. However, government responds that there are reasonable explanations for rising in house prices. First, the program of Hainan international tourism construction is lasting long. Second, the scarcities of resources and natural beauty in the island push the price up. Finally, the original house prices in Hainan are lower than any other area. Therefore, there is a big difference between the bubble economies in 1990s.
In my opinion, government should have some measures to avoid some vice businessmen or individual person use means to resell at a profit. Otherwise, government should control the prices continuously increasing unreasonable and in case of bubble economies appearing.

Beautiful Women
I find there is a big difference between eastern and western people judge beauty. In eastern country, we treat a woman who has a high bridged-nose, small mouth, pointed chin and pair of big eyes is beautiful. Beautiful women are commonly thin and good shaped. In addition, a small exquisite face and white smooth skin are perfectly appreciated. As a result of the format of Asian face, people in Asia prefer a chiseled face which is more like a western woman. Therefore, hybrids are welcomed very much. There are some women who are beautiful and famous in China. They are normal types that are loved by most people.
Li Jiaxing, Champion of Miss Hong Kong
Fan Bingbing, an actress
Xun Ruoxuan, a singer
Zhou Xun, an actress
Guan Zhilin, an actress
I find a note on the Internet is about voting for most beautiful woman in the world. I am curious that this web page is all about western girls, and only one woman stands for Asia—her name is Zhang Ziyi. As results of 99 percent of the most beautiful women are westerners, I think that the most voters are Europeans and Americans. The only one woman Zhang Ziyi is treated as the most beautiful in Asia. Actually, according to our judgment of beauties, she is not the most beautiful; even someone may think she is normal. Based on the observation, I notice that most women who are picked are natural. It means there should be some flecks under their eyes and little grains in their canthus. They are not perfect but have natural beauty. There, as I am not a western person, I have no idea about the choosing standards and types. Here are some of them.
Zhang Ziyi
K. D. Aubert
Anne Hathaway
Emmy Rossum
Emma Watson
By using media, beauties are more beautiful.

Marriage, Pregnancy and Birth
These days, I notice that the messages of female stars get married, be pregnant and give birth to babies are spreading over the website. Especially, in China, there is a storm of marriage flowing through the entertainment world. However, I feel that it is not good because of female stars in messages all marry with wealthy businessmen. It becomes a common sense that as if you have money, no matter what kind of women you can get. As the power of mass media, a lot of information about premarital pregnancies and shotgun marriages exposure on the open air; but parties use these gossips to cut a figure. Someone who has given birth to babies shows the pictures on the Internet to all the audiences. I am confused about why they do that and what the target for the action.
First, the behavior that female stars marry with rich men is personal. Nonetheless, they use media to widely spread the news, which result in a bad social convention. Rich men make a show of their possessions and poor people feel themselves inferior. Rich men can have a beautiful female star as wife, but poor people even cannot get married. In addition, China is a traditional country. Premarital pregnancy and shotgun marriage in town are such kind of scandal list. People just put it everywhere as a fun talk. A sense of propriety has lost completely. Finally, babies are living in a wealthy circumstance. That is fine. However, some people treat this as a swank. For example, parents spent millions of RMB to celebrate and baby received luxury gifts.
It is twisted to understand what happened there. The entertainment world and mass media just provide audiences amusement and news. But it influences our life more than before or we can say that our life has changed a lot.

Chinese New Year
Actually, in Valentine’s Day this year, it is another important day for Chinese people—Spring Festival. In China, there is a difference between solar calendar and lunar calendar. The universal use of time calculating is solar calendar, and lunar calendar is a specific way to record time in ancient China according to the change of moon. Compared with the real new year (January 1st), Chinese New Year is the most significant day for Chinese people. This is the real meaning of starting and beginning for them.
I watched a domestic variety show in China about the traditions and customs of Chinese New Year. The show invited some old and traditional people to recall the Chinese New Years in an earlier time, including what people were preparing, what they should notice and what kind of food people ate. The most popular traditions were touching off the firecrackers, paying a New Year call, pasting Spring Festival couplets, eating Jiaozi and getting together with families. However, some traditions that people recalled have gone. For example, young generations never kneel down and pay a New Year call to eldership these days. Even like some traditional snacks, such as Zaban, which are not known by everyone today.
Sometimes, variety show, such kind of media will record and recall for old things. I just feel pity that old traditions—not only the Spring Festival in China but also some similar customs in other countries—are gone with the speed of globalization. I just think about that if we lose a lot pureness of life. Actually, media is a way to keep some old memories and hold people’s persistence. I hope when everything has changed one day, the medias also have the most original records to evoke people’s mind.

The Best Way to Experience
Recently, the existence of iPad filled in different kinds of newspapers. For the high attention of iPad, is it the best way to experience the speed of internet and the so called multi-tough screen? The appearance looks like an iBook. The function of screen is same as an iTouch. It can act as a computer. However, no motion eye, compared with a computer, and no dialing and SMS, compared with an iPhone. Some Apple fans are looking up to it, but a lot of people just think that the price is higher than the capability. It is said that iPad is the best way to experience the Wed, mails, photos and videos, is that?
Considering surfing on the internet, a large multi-touch screen is fine. People feel free for their hands. The same as reading Webs, people enjoy the convenience of checking E-mails. It is no doubt that, for watching videos or looking photos, the design of the screen will let your eyes fly. In addition, you can read the books in iPad like read the real one. It means you may see the paper page and feel page turning on the screen. Besides, maps, notes, calendar and contacts are common functions. I think that the best reason to push you buy one is the good appearance. Generally, Apple is good at making its products look great.
However, I understand some people criticize iPad because of it is treated as such a simple product between a Mac and an iTouch. You may say that it cannot work as a computer and does not have the function of a phone. We should make sense that there is not a product can act as a mixture of computer, cell phone, MP3 and camera. Every electronic product should have a focus, and then it can reach a high achievement in the specific field. The existence of iPad is an advance. We should give hopes and encouragements to designers. Maybe, for iPad II, motion eye will be accepted. There are disadvantages in iPad, however, we also should pay attention to the breaks and creations on it.

A Racist Slur
These days, I am just confused about a word—Negro. By studying the 1950s culture of America, I find that there is a difference to speak “black” and “Negro”. In some reading materials, it is common to use “black” to refer African American. However, the frequency of “Negro” is not low. I know “Negro” means “black”. As a result of accepting Chinese education, I feel that it is polite to call a black person “Negro”. Ridiculously, I consider this is an official word to describe them. Even when I am writing some papers, I use “Negro” instead of “black” so that it can be read formally. Conversely, I am totally wrong. “Negro” is a racist slur to use on black people. As representing a long history of slavery, segregation and discrimination, it has been superseded.
When I was put “Negro” into the search engine, I found the meaning which was further than the definition. It is impolite to use it and rare to exist in spoken English. I carefully avoid the sensitive problems about race or discrimination; however, there is a cultural difference makes me use a racist slur. There is a true feeling in my mind. In earlier time, American discriminated black people because of they were trafficked to become slaveries. American were disgusted with Jewish people because of they were sly. American segregated Japanese because of Pearl Harbor. Even men discriminated women because of doubting women’s abilities. In my opinion, a slur word can be superseded immediately, but, discrimination should be eliminated by continuous efforts and effective actions.

“Memories of a Geisha”
Recently, I watched a film, named “Memories of a Geisha”, which was rearranged by Arthur Golden’s homonymous novel. Visually, it is a film that was acted by Chinese and Japanese actors and actresses; however, everyone played in English. The story was simple and normal, which rounded a geisha’s life to describe. First, a little girl grew up and became a geisha. Then, she fell in love with the governor but lost virginity because of another man. Continuously, a war between Japan and America broke out and she gave up to be a geisha to hide in a countryside. Finally, when a girl became a woman, she encountered the governor again in the suburban.
This movie is controversial because the based novel is written by an American writer who just met a Japanese geisha once. So, the description should be considered with culture differences and unilateralism. In addition, most of the situations in the movie were played in America, seldom of them were taken in Tokyo and Kyoto. Therefore, Japanese academician seriously disagree the expression of geisha in the film. They think it is not true and it has bias toward Japanese culture. The heroine in this movie, also the real person in our surrounding, wrote another novel—the real memories of a geisha—to fight against “Memories of a Geisha”.
I understand the imbalance in Japanese. However, one thing I can get from the film is that a geisha is not a trollop. Especially in some point, they are artists. Zhang ziyi and Gong li also played two important roles in this movie and their performances were really excellent. I think every actors and actresses should have prepared confidently to deduct the part. So no matter how it becomes, we can treat it as an art. What I think is that sometimes a foreign field of view is a different way to understand a foreign culture. There is no right or wrong, just because everyone has a unique way to interpret life. As well as the movie “Kung Fu Panda”, we also find it is a kind of life.

Shut down Google.cn
I found that recently the American executives of Google posted a statement about thinking over shutting down Google.cn in China. Since 2006, when Google first cooperated with China and came into Chinese Reach, it has been 4 years. At that time, considering the potential of this big market and the development of economy, Google compromised with Chinese government about censoring some results because of the special characters of Chinese government. However, the compromise, not only made Google lost the chance to reach the original goal in China—freedom of speech, but also suffered from an unfair cyber attack from China. Unsophisticatedly, during the attack, Google was sustained the theft of intellectual property and the aggression of users’ information by Chinese side. As a result of such a injustice, the statement has been posted.
On the one hand, I just can understand the actions of Chinese government as they want to protect the whole society from suffering the consensuses. A country which has special characters and some disputed subjects should be careful to handle and filter the news in media. Therefore, the certain meaning of “freedom of speech” can be not really existed. For example, no one in China can say socialism is bad. Even some negative information about government should be overwhelmed. Thus, the original goal of Google—freedom of speech—is hardly being approached in China. However, on the other hand, I cannot completely agree that government did an unfair cyber attack toward Google. It can be treated as a mean way to achieve the target. No matter in business, cooperation or other fields, by using tricks to steal intellectual property and aggress of users’ information is despicable. With being in trouble, Google cannot tolerant anymore and decide to consult with Chinese government. If there are no more solutions, shutting down Google.cn is the only way.
I noticed in the end of the statement, there is a piece of information which is delivered by David Drummond, SVP, Corporate Development and Chief Legal Officer, “We want to make clear that this move was driven by our executives in the United States, without the knowledge or involvement of our employees in China who have worked incredibly hard to make Google.cn the success it is today.” Obviously, the protection from Google Company in America wants to guard subsidiary to avoid the pressure of Chinese government and the confliction between two sides are intense under the table.
